Keewaydin Landing - meaning?

Pets - a maximum of 2 dogs or cats are allowed.  Dogs must not be allowed to run free unattended for their safety and that of other neighboring pets. Owners must clean up after their pets and all pets must be inoculated against fleas. You will be asked to verify what flea treatment you use. We use "advantage" with good success.

Our house rules are that:

  • dogs stay off the furniture and beds

  • you poop and scoop, whether on our lot, on the beach, or any of the community roadways

  • the dog is not allowed to roam free

  • the dog is not left whining or barking in the cottage for long periods

  • the dog doesn't annoy passersby or other dogs

  • the dog is supervised and not left alone outside.  At night skunks and raccoons are a country reality. (They are quite shy, but city dogs sometimes don't know when to leave well enough alone.)

  • you clean up any dog hair from the floors and furniture (typically requires a good vacuuming).

Smoking - smoking is not allowed within the cottage at all.  This is strictly enforced. Smoking is allowed outside, on the deck and under the covered porch.  Ashtrays outside are provided.  We really appreciate your cooperation on this subject.

Bedding and bath linens are not provided.  Please bring sheets, pillow cases, towels.  Protective mattress covers and pillows are provided as well as a small number of blankets, dish cloths and dish towels.

Guests - Overnight guests are allowed as long as the total number of people (including children) do not exceed 8 at any time.  A maximum of 4 cars is allowed in the driveway at any one time and the parking across the road is not to be used during the summer.  There is no parking on the street. In the winter vehicles can be towed away by the township if left on the road to allow for snow plowing and and reduce hazardous conditions.

Keys are not required for access to the building.  The main door has a security code which is changed periodically.  The security access code will be provided to you before your holiday begins.

Garbage Removal is to be performed by the renter.  If the owners are using their island, they may offer to assist in removal of garbage by special arrangement.  A Municipal garbage card is located at the cottage. The garbage dump is 5km from the cottage.  The Cottage Guide book details locations and times for the dump.

What does Keewaydin Landing mean? "Keewaydin" is a native word which loosely translates into "Homeward Wind" or the wind that takes you home. The island near the cottage is "Keewaydin Island".

Telephone Charges  Use of the cottage phone is for local calls only. All long distance calls must be charged to the renters calling card. Long Distance Blocking has been placed on this line - you will be able call 1-800 numbers, use Telephone Credit Cards or call collect only.

Cell Phones - most cell phones work although service is best from the deck or beach.

Drinking water is purified from the lake via a UV water filter. Charcoal filters are also used for the kitchen water supply.

Shoreline: Kennisis Lake is weed free with no leaches or blood suckers at all.  Water access at the cottage gently slopes with no drop offs  (children must always be supervised).  The beach is sandy or silty depending on water levels.  July has almost no sand with mid August normally having  a sandy beach which varies based on water levels.  A 10'x10' deck is also available at the shoreline.

Electrical Power (Hydro):  Cottage country experiences more power outages then at city homes.  In the event of a power outage exceeding 24 hours, an emergency generator is available to operate the septic and water systems.

Shopping is available at the marina (milk, bread, gas, video tapes, pop, ice cream).  A country store is 20 minutes away at West Guilford.  Full service grocery stores are available in Minden and Haliburton has an IGA with 24 hour service in the summer.

Marina and boat rentals are available. We suggest you reserve a boat in advance of your stay.

Haliburton Outdoor Equipment  (on county road 7 just before the turnoff for Wilkinson Road).

Note - this establishment transports boats directly to the lake - the store is on Kennisis Lake Rd - just before the lake.

Shared Driveway - the cottage owners have an island on Kennisis Lake and use the driveway and dock for access to the island.  The owners park across the street from the cottage and walk down the driveway to the dock and boat.  During the summer season, the owners are  usually at the island and can be available on short notice to lend a helping hand with unexpected problems.

What is NOT Permitted?

We ask all renters to use common sense and consider safety.  To ensure enjoyment of the lake for everyone the following activities are not permitted:

  • Dogs left to run freely has been our major problem.  Our neighbors already have had problem with renters dogs. Please ensure that your dog does not run loose.

  • Portable hot tubs

  • Ghetto Blasters

  • Seadooing/Water skiiing in the bay immediately in front of the cottage - please use main lake

  • Smoking inside
